A Russian naval group consisting of two large anti-submarine ships of the Russian Pacific Fleet “Admiral Tributs”, “Admiral Panteleyev” and the tanker “Pechenga” entered the port of Chittagong in Bangladesh, TASS reports. The Russian military ships arrived in Bangladesh for the first time in nearly 50 years. According to Alexander Mantytsky, Russia's Ambassador to Bangladesh, the previous Russian naval personnel came to Bangladesh half a century ago with the specific task of carrying out an unusual and not widely recognized operation to remove mines and clear the port of Chittagong. The operation lasted from April 1972 to June 1974, with over 1 000 Soviet sailors diligently working on the task. As noted by the Honorary Consul of the Russian Federation in Chittagong, Ashik Imran, the current arrival of the Russian sailors to Chittagong is exclusively for friendly purposes.
