Iran's border guard forces have started large-scale military exercises in the country's southern waters in order to improve their capabilities in the fight against sea smuggling and piracy, Mehr news agency reports. The exercise, called the Mohammad Rasulullah Regional Maritime Exercise, began in a ceremony in the coastal port city of Bandar Abbas on Wednesday in the presence of Iran's police chief, Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Radan. The exercise will cover a wide area in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman and will involve maritime border forces stationed at Bushehr, Hormozgan, Chah Bahar, and Qeshm bases. The exercises are aimed at increasing the combat capability of Iran's border guard forces and improving security along Iran's maritime borders in the region.
