The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting behind closed doors amid the war between Israel and Gaza, but failed to reach the unanimity required for adopting a joint statement, reports Al Jazeera. The United States called on the 15 members of the Council to strongly condemn Hamas for its actions in Israel. The Council held a meeting for about 90 minutes and heard the address of Tor Wennesland, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process. Diplomats said UN Security Council members had hoped for a broader focus than condemning Hamas. The United Arab Emirates, which normalized relations with Israel as part of a 2020 landmark deal, said it expected more UN Security Council meetings on the crisis.
