United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called for an immediate stop to violence in Gaza after Palestinian group Hamas carried out its biggest attack on Israel in years, Reuters reports.Volker Turk said he was shocked by reports that hundreds of rockets were fired at Israel on Saturday, as well as reports that Israeli civilians have been taken hostage. "This attack has had a terrible impact on Israeli civilians," Türk said in his statement. "Civilians must never be the target of attack." Noting that Israeli forces have responded with air strikes into the densely populated Gaza Strip, he called on them to “take all precautions to avoid civilian casualties there”. “I call for an immediate stop to the violence, and appeal to all sides and key countries in the region to de-escalate to avoid further bloodshed,” he said.
