The leader of the military wing of Hamas, Mohammed Deif, said that the armed group has launched a new military operation against Israel, Arab News reports. In a statement, Mohammed Deif said 5,000 rockets were fired into Israel on Saturday morning, marking the start of Operation Al-Aqsa Storm. Israel also reported infiltration of militants from Gaza. “This is the day of the greatest battle to end the last occupation on earth,” Deif said. In turn, the Israeli military said that “several terrorists have infiltrated Israeli territory,” and the Israeli Defense Minister approved the conscription of reservists into the army. The infiltration into Israel came as militants in the Gaza Strip launched dozens of rockets into Israel on Saturday morning, setting off air raid sirens across the country and raising the prospect of another round of heavy fighting.
