OSCE Chairman-in-Office calls for increased international support for Armenians in Artsakh

by Lilit Oct. 6, 2023

The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Foreign Minister of North Macedonia Bujar Osmani, has called for increased international support and humanitarian assistance for more than 100,000 Karabakh Armenians who have found refuge in the Republic of Armenia. “Humanitarian needs must remain a top priority, and the international donor community must continue to actively demonstrate solidarity and shared responsibility to assist Armenia in its government's response to this unfolding humanitarian crisis. OSCE Chairman-in-Office Osmani took note of the visit of UN representatives to Khankendi/Stepanakert on October 1 and believes that continued participation of the international community will contribute to stabilizing the situation on the ground and efforts to achieve sustainable peace. Discussions regarding international participation on the ground should continue, as an independent international observation mission would provide reassurance to those wishing to return. Osmani notes Azerbaijan's public statements regarding the integration of the Armenian population and the prospects for the return of the displaced population. Protecting the rights and safety of Karabakh Armenians in accordance with OSCE commitments is the responsibility of Azerbaijan. The use of force in diplomatic negotiations to resolve disputes is always unacceptable and undermines the prospects for achieving a decent and inclusive world. Chairman-in-Office Osmani supports the continuation of political processes aimed at concluding a peace treaty between the countries. The OSCE and its relevant structures, within the framework of their mandate, stand ready to contribute to this process in accordance with the values and commitments of the Organization to achieve a just, lasting, decent and inclusive peace in the region,” the statement said.
