Senator: US must prevent further military action by Azerbaijan

by Lilit Oct. 6, 2023

US Senator Cory Booker, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has strongly voiced his support for an immediate halt and reassessment of all US assistance to Azerbaijan. He also called on the Azerbaijani government to grant access to independent observers. Senator Booker emphasized the need to work towards preventing further military actions by Azerbaijan. In his statement, Senator Booker expressed deep concern about Azerbaijan's actions in Nagorno-Karabakh, including the blockade of humanitarian aid, the use of military force to seize the region, the detention of political leaders, and the mass displacement of Armenians. He characterized these actions as systematic oppression and violence amounting to ethnic cleansing. Senator Booker called for intensified humanitarian assistance efforts to aid the tens of thousands of ethnic Armenians who have been displaced from their homes in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh). He stressed the moral responsibility of the United States and the international community to prevent history from repeating itself, particularly in light of the Armenian genocide that occurred over a century ago.
