News - Borrell: 2030 not exact date for EU enlargement

The European Union (EU) foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, has stated that the 2030 target for EU enlargement, which was previously noted by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, is considered only as a benchmark, not an exact date. This is a political benchmark; the purpose of setting a date is to mobilize political energy to start a movement, but it does not mean an exact date, Borrell said before the start of the informal EU summit in Granada, Spain. According to him, the EU has spent too much time on the enlargement process. Josep Borrell added that Ukraine, which became the last among the candidates for EU membership, is pushing this line forward, and now the movement will be fast.
