News - Hungarian Prime Minister opposes sanctions on Azerbaijan over Karabakh

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has firmly expressed his opposition to the European Parliament's proposal to contemplate targeted sanctions against Azerbaijani government officials for breaches of the ceasefire and human rights violations in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh). Orban made these remarks during a media interaction preceding an informal meeting of EU leaders held in Granada on October 6. In response to questions regarding the recent European Parliament resolution on Azerbaijan, which called for a reassessment of relations with Baku and the potential implementation of targeted sanctions, Orban said that Azerbaijan plays a strategically important role, particularly in the context of achieving energy independence and reducing reliance on Russian energy sources.
