News - ECtHR rules in favor of Armenian citizens in ‘Ghazaryan and Bayramyan v. Azerbaijan’ case

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has ruled in favor of Armenian citizens Armen Ghazaryan and Astghik Bayramyan in the case of "Ghazaryan and Bayramyan v. Azerbaijan." The applicants, who live in the village of Berdavan in Armenia near the Azerbaijani border, filed an application with the ECHR after their son was captured by the Azerbaijani military in July 2018 and subsequently sentenced to 20 years in prison by an Azerbaijani court. He was returned to Armenia in December 2020 as part of a prisoner exchange. The court's ruling favored the applicants, and Azerbaijan has been ordered to pay them 10,000 euros for moral damages and cover the costs of the proceedings, totaling 3,225 euros. The case was based on violations of Article 3 (prohibition of inhuman or degrading treatment) and Article 5 (right to security and liberty) of the European Convention on Human Rights.
