Switzerland allocates 1.5 million Swiss francs for forcibly displaced persons from Karabakh

by Lilit Oct. 4, 2023

The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs has designated 1.5 million Swiss francs to humanitarian organizations offering assistance to forcibly displaced persons from Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) and those still residing in Karabakh. This allocation was announced in a statement from the Swiss Foreign Ministry. “In less than a week, more than 100,000 people from Nagorno-Karabakh have fled to Armenia and face now challenging humanitarian circumstances. The Armenian authorities are working to host these people in the best possible conditions, particularly in view of the coming winter,” the statement says. In response to this emergency, Switzerland has decided to allocate nearly 1.5 million Swiss francs to support humanitarian efforts on the ground. Of this amount, 500,000 Swiss francs will be directed to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), while the remaining funds will be distributed among key United Nations agencies operating in the region in the coming days. This additional funding supplements the 1 million Swiss francs already provided to the ICRC by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) for its operations in the region in 2023.
