News - European Parliament members: Azerbaijan must face consequences of its actions towards Karabakh, Armenia

During Tuesday’s debate, members of the European Parliament (MEPs) harshly criticized Azerbaijani president Aliyev regime's actions towards Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia. Marina Kaljurand, the chair of the European Parliament’s delegation for relations with the South Caucasus, stated that the European Union (EU) should review its relations with Azerbaijan and posit its respective conditions. The EU needs to stop the appeasement policy, and there should be immediate consequences for the Aliyev regime, she emphasized. Also, Kaljurand slammed the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who stood next to Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev during her visit last year and praised Baku, calling it "a reliable partner of the EU." The European Commission made it very clear that Azerbaijan's actions, starting with military operations and ending with the forced displacement of the population of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is actually ethnic cleansing and unacceptable, Kaljurand noted. According to the MEP, the EU has the necessary leverage to respond, and its response should include sanctions on Azerbaijan. Nathalie Loiseau, Chair of the Subcommittee on Security and Defense of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs, also reflected on the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh, and called not to repeat the mistakes of the past.
