News - Armenia’s parliament votes in favor of ratifying Rome Statute

Тhe National Assembly of Armenia voted in for the ratification of the Rome Statute with 60 MPs in favor and 22 against. The opposition boycotted the debate held Tuesday, declaring that the Rome Statute does not serve Armenia’s foreign interests. Secretary of the opposition Armenia faction Artsvik Minasyan said its ratification contradicts the Constitution. Yerevan's plans to join the Rome Statute are considered unacceptable in Russia against the background of the court issuing what it calls an "illegal arrest warrant" against Russian President Vladimir Putin. Armenian officials, in turn, assure that the ratification is not against the Russian Federation, and Yerevan has sent appropriate proposals to Moscow over the situation, proposing to sign a bilateral agreement for the legal solution of the issue. Armenia says it sent the text to Russia in April, but has not received any response yet.
