News - Ruling party explains procedure for Rome Statute entry into force in Armenia

After the National Assembly (NA) approves the ratification of the Rome Statute, it is sent to the President of Armenia, who prepares the ratification document based on this decision. Vladimir Vardanyan, chairman of the NA Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs and member of the ruling Civil Contract Party, told reporters at the NA about this on Tuesday. "After that, it [i.e. the letter] is transferred to an international entity which is called to collect these documents. After 60 days, the document comes into force," added Vardanyan. As reported earlier, the NA of Armenia today approved the ratification of the Rome Statute. The parliamentary opposition, however, boycotted the respective debates, arguing that the Rome Statute does not serve Armenia's foreign policy interests. And Artsvik Minasyan, secretary of the opposition Armenia Faction, added that its ratification runs counter to the constitution of Armenia.
