News - Armenia FM lauds Cyprus willingness to provide assistance to persons displaced from Karabakh

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Ararat Mirzoyan, on Monday met with a delegation representing various factions of the House of Representatives of Cyprus, and by chairman Harris Georgiades of the Cyprus-Armenia Inter-Parliamentary Committee on Cooperation with the National Assembly of Armenia. During the meeting, the interlocutors discussed regional security issues, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia informs Armenian News-NEWS.am. In this connection, Mirzoyan emphasized that the people of Nagorno-Karabakh had to leave their homeland as a result of the aggressive actions of Azerbaijan, including the large-scale military attack of September 19, and were subjected to ethnic cleansing. The FM reminded that the Armenian side repeatedly raised the alarm about the deteriorating situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, including within the framework of the UN Security Council and the General Assembly, yet the international community, in particular the UN and the main actors, did not take targeted actions in time to prevent this disaster. Reflecting on the position of Cyprus on this matter, Mirzoyan lauded the principled approach and adoption of resolutions by the parliament of Cyprus, as well as the latter’s willingness to provide assistance to the Armenians forcibly displaced from Nagorno Karabakh. It was stressed on both sides that the current situation showed that political statements are not enough and clear steps are needed in order to rule out the use of force or the threat of using force, as well as the ambitions toward the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Armenia. At the meeting, the interaction between Armenia and Cyprus and their parliaments in various formats and multilateral platforms was discussed. Also, the interlocutors emphasized the comprehensive bilateral agenda formed between the two countries and the expanding cooperation in various domains.
