International community did not take active steps to prevent Baku's policy in Karabakh, Armenian FM tells ambassadors

by Lilit Oct. 2, 2023

The international community did not take active steps to prevent Azerbaijan’s policy over Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has said at a meeting with the heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Armenia and representatives of international organizations on Monday. Minister Mirzoyan presented the situation created because of Azerbaijan's continuous anti-Armenian policy towards the people of Nagorno-Karabakh, and in particular, the large-scale military attack unleashed on September 19. The minister reminded that the actions of Azerbaijan were accompanied by the targeting of civilian population and infrastructures, resulting in hundreds of victims and wounded. He added that the Azerbaijani aggression was preceded by the illegal blocking of the Lachin corridor, the only road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia and the whole world, for more than nine months. Ararat Mirzoyan emphasized that the continuous warnings of the Armenian side that Azerbaijan is planning to subject Nagorno-Karabakh to ethnic cleansing with premeditated actions did not lead to effective steps by the international community to prevent Baku's policy. The foreign minister stressed that the population of Nagorno-Karabakh, more than 100,000 Armenians, was forcibly displaced, seeing an existential threat for themselves and their family members, including children, women and the elderly. Referring to the arrival of the UN mission to Nagorno-Karabakh yesterday, the minister emphasized that it is belated and, unfortunately, the only result of that mission can be the registering of the ethnic cleansing of the Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh. Referring to the readiness of support from various countries and international organizations at this stage in order to overcome the humanitarian problems, Ararat Mirzoyan expressed his gratitude for the urgent support provided. Tigran Khachatryan, RA Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinator of the Humanitarian Center, presented to the participants of the meeting the RA government's steps aimed at identifying and addressing the primary problems of more than 100,000 Armenians forcibly displaced from Nagorno Karabakh. He also spoke about the state assistance programs developed based on the assessment of urgent needs, emphasizing in parallel with them the proper implementation of comprehensive needs assessment works, including in cooperation with international partners, which will allow developing targeted long-term assistance programs.
