News - Armenia's lawsuit against Azerbaijan over Karabakh events submitted to International Court of Justice

Armenia has officially submitted a statement of claim against Azerbaijan to the International Court of Justice, requesting the application of temporary measures under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD). “The Republic of Armenia, referring to Article 41 of the Statute and Article 73 of the Rules of Court, submitted a request to the Court yesterday for the indication of provisional measures, “to preserve and protect rights enshrined in the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (‘CERD’)”. Armenia requests the Court to indicate the following provisional measures, and to reaffirm Azerbaijan’s obligations under the Orders it has rendered in this case, in particular those of 7 December 2021 and 22 February 2023,” the Court’s website says. The lawsuit, which contains 10 key points, calls on Azerbaijan to abstain from any actions that may breach its obligations under CERD. Additionally, Azerbaijan is urged to refrain from any actions, whether direct or indirect, that could result in the displacement of ethnic Armenians who still reside in Nagorno-Karabakh.
