Senator Jack Reed calls for sanctions against Azerbaijan in response to human rights violations

by Lilit Sept. 30, 2023

US Senator Jack Reed has made a compelling call for increased support to the Armenian people of Nagorno-Karabakh, emphasizing the need for concrete actions in response to ongoing human rights violations. In a recent speech, Senator Reed urged his colleagues and the administration to take strong measures to hold Azerbaijan accountable for its actions. Senator Reed specifically called for the introduction of targeted sanctions against Azerbaijan and advocated for ending American security assistance to the Aliyev government. His statements reflect a growing concern over human rights abuses and violations in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Sanctions have been increasingly used as a diplomatic tool to address human rights violations and promote accountability on the international stage. Senator Reed's call underscores the importance of robust action to address the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh and advocate for the rights and well-being of the affected Armenian population. Earlier, NEWS.am reported that the large-scale aggression initiated by Azerbaijan against Nagorno-Karabakh since September 19 has led to a heart-wrenching exodus, with countless residents urgently leaving their native lands behind and making the arduous journey to Armenia. In the face of this crisis, they have little opportunity to gather their personal belongings, leaving their homes and possessions behind. As of September 29, a staggering number of approximately 98,929 citizens, forcibly displaced from Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) due to recent events, have arrived in the Republic of Armenia.
