News - UN mission dispatched to assess humanitarian needs in Nagorno-Karabakh

A UN mission conducted in collaboration with Azerbaijan is set to evaluate the humanitarian needs of the local population, including those who have chosen to stay and those forced to flee. Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, made this announcement during a recent briefing. He noted that the mission is scheduled to take place over the upcoming weekend. The mission will comprise representatives not only from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) but also from various other UN agencies. What sets this mission apart is that it marks the first time in three decades that the UN has been granted access to Nagorno-Karabakh. The mission will travel to Nagorno-Karabakh via air transportation from Azerbaijan. Once on-site, the primary objective of the UN team will be to assess the ongoing situation and identify the humanitarian needs of both residents who have chosen to remain in the region and those who are leaving their homes. Dujarric added that he could not specify how long the UN mission in Karabakh would operate.
