News - Armenia legislature committee gives positive conclusion to draft to ratify Rome Statute

The Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia on Thursday debated and voted on the ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, and the draft on adopting a statement on retroactively recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court. The aforementioned draft was unanimously adopted and will be put on the agenda of the upcoming NA plenary sessions. In case of ratification by the NA, the Rome Statute will enter into force in Armenia within 60 days, said Yeghishe Kirakosyan, the country's representative on international legal affairs, presenting the aforesaid draft. Earlier, the Constitutional Court of Armenia ruled that the obligations stipulated in the Rome Statute were in accordance with the Constitution of Armenia. In 2022, the Armenian government petitioned to the Constitutional Court on this matter. The government has returned to the matter of ratifying the Rome Statute because, according to the rationale of this draft, they see an opportunity to call Azerbaijan to account.
