USC students were in for an unexpected treat when former President Joe Biden appeared at a discussion on democracy on October 26. About 50 students, gathered at the event led by Biden's adviser, Mike Donilon, at the Center for the Political Future, were thrilled to engage in an informal conversation with Biden. Rather than delivering a speech, Biden interacted directly with the students, emphasizing the significance of public service and political participation. The former president also showcased his famous love for ice cream, which was served during the visit. Sophomore E.J. Kovacs-Morgan described the encounter as 'spectacular,' expressing that it reinforced his ambitions to pursue a career in public service. Donilon, who heads the 'Democracy 2026' study group, wanted Biden's visit to center around student engagement, giving them the chance to learn from someone with firsthand experience in leading the nation. This event was just one part of the CPF's mission to provide students with direct interactions with key political figures, including former Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus, and ex-U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, among others. USC's dedication to hosting diverse political voices is seen in its bipartisan leadership under Robert Shrum and Mike Murphy, which will continue with Sen. Gary Peters joining as director. This visit adds to the legacy of presidential engagements at USC, a line dating back to 1880 with leaders like Franklin D. Roosevelt and Barack Obama. Donilon remarked that Biden's visit encapsulated the President's passion for engaging with students and celebrating democracy, especially over shared treats like pizza and ice cream.
