American Woman Convicted for Ties to ISIS

by Lilit Oct. 28, 2026

In a historic verdict, an American woman, Halima Salman, has been found guilty by a federal jury for her involvement with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The case marks a significant moment in counterterrorism efforts and highlights the complex dynamics of radicalization. Salman, 27, who hails from Brooklyn, was convicted for marrying an ISIS fighter and undertaking military training with the terrorist organization while in Syria. Court proceedings revealed that she was part of an all-female ISIS battalion, where she received weapons training and was authorized to carry ammunition and an assault rifle. This information was corroborated by evidence presented by the Department of Justice, which included a training completion certificate, photographs of Salman posing with the ISIS flag, and video footage showing her brandishing an AK-47. The Department of Justice has stressed that Salman’s actions were entirely voluntary, driven by her alignment with the extremist ideology of ISIS. Assistant Attorney General for National Security, John A. Eisenberg, underscored the severe implications of Salman’s offenses, pointing out the heinous crimes perpetrated by ISIS, including mass executions and systematic terrorization of civilian populations. He stated, “Today’s verdict is a testament to our unwavering resolve to bring to justice those who support or receive training from such devastating groups.” The investigation, spearheaded by the FBI’s New York Field Office in collaboration with the Eastern District of New York, uncovered the depth of Salman’s involvement with ISIS. The case was a complex operation that involved analyzing communication data, video footage, and survivor testimonies. James C. Barnacle, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI New York Field Office, remarked, “Halima Salman knowingly sought terrorist training and aligned herself with an organization known for its lethal ideologies and violent operations.” This guilty verdict follows troubling revelations about Salman’s past. As a teenager in 2017, her father lured her into Syria under the guise of visiting relatives in Turkey. Once there, their lives were upended when armed ISIS operatives seized their vehicle. Life in ISIS-occupied territories involved a harrowing existence for Salman, which culminated in an arranged marriage to an ISIS fighter at the age of 18, following the death of her father in an airstrike. Throughout the trial, the prosecution painted a vivid picture of Salman's conscious choices and ideological commitment to the atrocities ISIS represents. The defense, meanwhile, attempted to illustrate the coercive circumstances of Salman’s past. In delivering the verdict, the court acknowledged the challenges faced by law enforcement in tackling the threat posed by foreign terrorist organizations and the importance of this case in setting a precedent for similar prosecutions. As the fight against terrorism continues, this conviction sends a strong signal regarding the consequences of affiliating with extremist groups. This case remains a critical reminder of the ongoing efforts required to combat radicalization and to address the undercurrents of terrorism at both national and international levels. The verdict reinforces the FBI's commitment to defending the homeland and ensuring that those who support terror are relentlessly pursued and held accountable.
