Cholera Crisis in Haiti: A Decade-Long Battle Begins

by Lilit Oct. 22, 2026

On October 21, 2010, Haiti confirmed its first cases of cholera in over a century, initiating a public health crisis that would claim thousands of lives and affect millions more. The cholera outbreak occurred less than a year after the devastating January 2010 earthquake, which had left Haiti's infrastructure in shambles and its population vulnerable. Initially, alarms were raised when unusual cases of severe diarrhea and dehydration began to appear in the Artibonite and Centre departments, areas where access to safe drinking water and sanitation was severely limited. Laboratory tests indicated the presence of Vibrio cholerae O1, which was eventually traced back to UN peacekeepers from Nepal stationed near the Artibonite River. Contaminated sewage from the peacekeepers' camp had entered the river, a vital water source for many Haitians. This revelation in 2016 led the United Nations to acknowledge its role in the outbreak. With no recent exposure to cholera, the Haitian population lacked immunity, and the pathogen spread rapidly through contaminated water and food. By October 27, cases had surged to 4,722, with 303 deaths reported. Efforts were made to treat the sick with oral rehydration solutions and intravenous fluids, while residents were advised to adopt better sanitation and handwashing practices. By early December 2010, nearly 92,000 cases had been identified across Haiti, with over 2,000 deaths reported. The CDC reported more than 43,000 hospitalizations, highlighting the epidemic’s scale and the challenges facing Haiti's overstretched healthcare system. The cholera crisis exposed critical weaknesses in the country's water and sanitation infrastructure, prompting urgent calls to strengthen public health systems to prevent future outbreaks. The cholera outbreak marked the beginning of a decade-long struggle for Haiti, serving as a stark reminder of the importance of sustained investment in public health measures. October 21, 2010, now stands as a significant date in Haiti’s history, representing both a tragedy and a call to action for improved health and sanitation standards in the Caribbean nation.
