UCF Prepares for Matchup Against BYU Without Star Quarterback Barnett

by Lilit Oct. 20, 2026

The University of Central Florida (UCF) Knights are navigating choppy waters ahead of their critical matchup against the undefeated BYU Cougars. The Knights, who started the season impressively with a 3-1 record, have lately been on a downswing, losing two consecutive games. These defeats were against Houston, with a 27-17 scoreline, followed by a 42-18 loss to Oklahoma State, marking a worrying lapse in defensive solidity. Compounding their woes is the absence of key offensive linchpin, quarterback Alonza Barnett III. Barnett has been missing from the lineup since he sustained a hamstring injury during their Week 2 clash against Pittsburgh. As the Knights prepare for their upcoming Saturday game, they must contend with the fact that Barnett is not expected to return in time, as reported by ESPN's Pete Thamel. Barnett's absence has reallocated the quarterback duties to backup Keyone Jenkins, who is set to start for the fifth consecutive game. While Jenkins has managed to hold the fort somewhat, completing 70.3% of his passes, amassing 806 yards, and contributing eight touchdowns alongside three interceptions in his tenure, the starting role was undoubtedly crafted with Barnett's talents in mind. Jenkins also brings some versatility to the offense, having scored thrice with his legs. However, UCF's recent performances have shown that despite Jenkins' efforts, Barnett's dynamic playmaking is sorely missed. Barnett's transfer to UCF from James Madison was a significant coup for the Knights. He had previously catapulted the Dukes into the College Football Playoff and garnered the title of Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year coupled with first-team All-Sun Belt recognition. His stellar last season stats—2,806 passing yards, 23 passing touchdowns with eight interceptions, coupled with 589 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns—evidenced his adeptness at the helm. However, his impact at UCF has been limited due to the injury, having only played two games thus far, during which he managed 344 passing yards, two touchdowns through the air, one interception, and added 22 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. Jenkins has exhibited flashes of brilliance with performances like his stellar 19 of 20 completions against TCU and a 265-yard, four-touchdown display against Oklahoma State. Yet, the Knights have managed only a 2-2 record under his stewardship. As they face the daunting challenge of a highly-ranked BYU side, having Barnett could have added a vital strategic advantage with his offensive prowess. Nevertheless, the onus is now on Jenkins to rise to the occasion and spearhead the UCF offense against one of the nation's formidable teams.
