Abdulrahman Alfozan, an engineer at OpenAI, has been detained on charges of espionage, amid allegations he planted a listening device in a company's conference room. Communication records, as per a Justice Department memo, suggest a connection with a member of the Saudi royal family and plots to leave the United States for Saudi Arabia. The memo outlines Alfozan’s plan to flee with his family on a one-way flight, a journey allegedly funded by a Saudi military official. Prosecutors discovered Alfozan used a USB device hidden in a television to spy on sensitive meetings involving OpenAI executives and external participants. This measure could severely threaten U.S. national security, prompting the Justice Department to consider further charges. In the midst of the ongoing FBI investigation, OpenAI has terminated Alfozan and remains cooperative with authorities. The company reassures no critical data breaches from Alfozan have been identified. Investigators discovered a note titled "Riyadh tasks" and WhatsApp conversations with a Saudi royal family member discussing an AI initiative in Saudi Arabia. The royal member's efforts to recruit Alfozan were documented, although Alfozan intended to leave OpenAI after his stock vested. He had set up the device as a covert continuous audio recorder using AI chatbot technology. Alfozan's wife and son departed for Saudi Arabia the day after his arrest, according to FBI agents. Alfozan had reportedly confirmed intentions to return to OpenAI after visiting Saudi Arabia but planned an eventual permanent move. His upcoming court appearance will discuss possible detention pre-trial.
