News - Chicago Blackhawks' defense suffers a setback due to Byram's injury.

The Chicago Blackhawks must adapt to an early-season setback as defenseman Bowen Byram is sidelined with an upper-body injury. Head coach Jeff Blashill has not disclosed specifics about the injury, which occurred after Byram was struck by a shot in a recent 5-3 triumph over the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 25-year-old blueliner played a significant 24:37 minutes that game, marking his first point with the Blackhawks after being acquired from the Buffalo Sabres in an offseason trade. In Byram's absence, Ethan Del Mastro will step into the lineup, bringing physicality and grit, while Teuvo Teravainen tested placements on the power play during the team's morning skate. This unexpected lineup change marks just the second game Byram will miss during the 2026-27 season, his first post after welcoming twin daughters earlier this month. Byram's integration into the Blackhawks' structure has been challenging. Despite logging heavy minutes, his campaign has started on a rocky note with one assist and a minus-seven rating. Hoping to solidify their defense, Chicago had placed high expectations on Byram, especially following his substantial six-year contract extension worth $12.5 million annually, commencing in the 2027-28 season. The team, currently standing at a 2-5-0 record, faces pressures to perform amidst injuries and roster adjustments as they prepare to clash with the Winnipeg Jets later this week. The game is set for 8 p.m. ET, offering an opportunity for the Blackhawks to recalibrate and potentially rebound, despite the recent challenges to their defensive lineup.
