In Aiken, a profound celebration echoed through the air as cancer survivors gathered at Aiken Regional Medical Centers to mark the 31st annual Cancer Survivors Day. Among them was Franki Stevens, whose journey from a breast cancer diagnosis almost a year ago has been fraught with challenge and triumph. Facing surgery, over 20 rounds of chemotherapy, and radiation, Stevens' tenacity is now rewarded with hopeful news: 'I'm cancer free,' she jubilantly declared, attributing her success to the unwavering support of God, family, and friends. The event on October 9 was alive with joy as survivors like Sonia Steelman, diagnosed in 2013, and Edgefield County's Alice Schoultz, who faced her battle in 2007, joined Stevens. Steelman, who bypassed chemotherapy and radiation post-surgery, shared her gratitude, while Schoultz reflected on survival through divine grace after a hard-fought personal battle. Under festive decorations of red, white, and blue balloons, the spiritedness of the survivors was infectious. Participants enjoyed lively music, donned complimentary T-shirts, and reveled in the camaraderie formed through shared experiences. The gathering served not only as a beacon of hope but also a heartwarming reminder of life’s preciousness, unifying individuals bonded by resilience. Brent Slack, director of radiation oncology at Aiken Regional, underscored the event’s essence, emphasizing the shared journey and strength of those who have prevailed against cancer: 'We’re here to celebrate our survivors, everybody who has gone through the fight and come out on the other side'. Cancer Survivors Day, strategically held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, reinforced the community spirit and support vital in battling cancer. Attendees enjoyed a complimentary meal and the invaluable gift of fellowship, determined to savor every moment of renewed lives. This annual event not only honors the courage and spirit of surviving but fortifies the resolve to continue fighting, advocating, and cherishing each hard-won victory in the ongoing battle against cancer.
