Commanders Separate from Veteran Tackle Humphries

by Lilit Sept. 11, 2026

In a surprising roster move, the Washington Commanders have released veteran offensive tackle D.J. Humphries as they prepare for their 2026 opening game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Humphries, who was brought in to strengthen an already injury-plagued offensive line following All-Pro Laremy Tunsil's triceps injury, saw his time with the team cut short just weeks after being added near the end of training camp. The timing of the release, just two days before the first kickoff of the season, suggests a strategic financial decision. By releasing him now, Washington avoids his salary becoming fully guaranteed by Sunday. His role as a backup was meant to provide depth and a safety net, but the team might consider bringing him back on a new contract or moving him to the practice squad if the situation requires it later in the season. Humphries’ journey in the NFL has been marked by significant ups and downs. Drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 2015 as the 24th pick, he established himself as a reliable starter, leading to a Pro Bowl selection in 2021. This period was his peak, characterized by strong pass protection and leadership. However, a series of injuries and changing team dynamics led to his release by Arizona, followed by brief tenures with the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams. Despite these challenges, his experience—over 100 professional games and 101 starts—made a compelling case for Washington’s late interest. However, with Tunsil sidelined, the team now looks to Brandon Coleman as the starting left tackle, ensuring there is no guaranteed veteran immediately behind him. The decision serves as a stark reminder of the shifting dynamics and harsh realities within the league, especially concerning an offensive line fraught with uncertainty. For Humphries, the future involves waiting to see if another team will seek a tackle with proven starting experience, or if the Commanders themselves might reconsider after the opening week. In the meantime, Washington’s strategy places them on the road against a formidable Eagles team, where they will now rely entirely on a restructured lineup led by Coleman as the season progresses.
