Commanders Release D.J. Humphries Ahead of Season Opener

by Lilit Sept. 11, 2026

In a surprising move, the Washington Commanders have released veteran offensive tackle D.J. Humphries just days before their much-anticipated season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. Humphries was initially brought in to add depth and experience to the Commanders' offensive line, but NFL Network's Ian Rapoport shared the unexpected news of his departure on August 30. Humphries, who made a name for himself with the Arizona Cardinals by earning Pro Bowl honors in 2021, has had a career marked by both achievements and challenges. The 6-foot-5, 302-pound lineman suffered a major setback in 2023 with a torn ACL while with the Cardinals. However, his resilience saw him return to the field with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024 and later with the Los Angeles Rams throughout the 2025 season. With 101 career starts, primarily from his time with the Cardinals, Humphries was poised to bring veteran presence to the Commanders. The decision to part ways with Humphries leaves him in a precarious position, just as teams finalize their rosters. The Commanders now face the Eagles with a void to fill, while Humphries, known for his solid protection on the line, must seek a new opportunity to continue his NFL career. The unexpected timing of this move has stirred conversations about the Commanders' offensive strategy as they prepare for the challenging season ahead.
