Zelenskyy Narrowly Avoids Drone Incident Over Moldova

by Lilit Sept. 9, 2026

In a dramatic near-miss over Moldovan airspace, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy experienced a significant security scare when a Russian drone approached his corporate jet. The incident occurred while Zelenskyy was en route from Moldova to Oslo, as confirmed by Norway's Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre. Although specific details about the proximity of the drone to Zelenskyy's plane were not disclosed, the event underscores the tense reality faced by the Ukrainian leader amidst ongoing regional conflicts. Moldovan authorities identified the drone as a Shahed, Russia's primary attack drone, which had violated their airspace on Tuesday, having entered from Ukraine. The intrusion by the Shahed drone, known for its capabilities and often used by Russia, prompted Moldovan officials to temporarily shut down the country's airspace as a precaution. The timing of the drone's entry at approximately 4:20 p.m. coincided with Zelenskyy's preparations for his flight to attend King Harald of Norway's funeral. This incident is emblematic of broader tensions, as NATO has previously accused Russia of deploying drones in Eastern Europe to test defenses. While Russia denies these allegations, such incidents continue to pose potential threats to regional stability and security. Moldova's government reported the incident to Reuters and stated that Zelenskyy's aircraft was eventually cleared for departure once the drone had vacated the airspace. A subsequent official statement confirmed that the Shahed drone, after initially intruding into Romanian airspace, returned to Moldova and ultimately crashed in the Glodeni district. Thankfully, the crash resulted in no injuries, though it did ignite a fire that was contained. This close call highlights the persistent dangers posed by drones in conflict zones and serves as a stark reminder of the volatile geopolitical environment surrounding Ukraine. Zelenskyy's office has not issued any immediate comment regarding the incident, but it remains a telling example of the challenges confronting regional leaders amid escalating tensions.
