Hunter Greene's Successful Recovery Journey Following Surgery

by Lilit Sept. 8, 2026

Cincinnati Reds’ promising pitcher, Hunter Greene, is navigating through his recovery phase following his second Tommy John surgery with remarkable optimism and resilience. Returning to the clubhouse less than a month after his surgery, Greene was visibly upbeat, reassuring his teammates and fans by showcasing an unrestrained right arm and a determined spirit. Manager Terry Francona, who recently spoke with Greene during the Reds’ series against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, stated, “Once you do it and get the surgery over with, and you've got a goal, it kind of helps,” alluding to Greene's focused mindset and the surgical procedure done in Los Angeles which marked the start of his rehabilitation. At this early stage, Greene’s rehab primarily consists of range-of-motion exercises for his elbow. His medical team has reported no setbacks, bolstering hope and confidence in a successful recovery. “It’s progressing well,” Greene confirmed, opting to keep specific details under wraps for now. Having previously undergone elbow surgery for bone chips earlier this year, Greene's troubles began with recurring pain five starts into his comeback. The discomfort led to a more severe diagnosis, requiring the crucial UCL reconstruction on August 12, the second of its kind in his young career. Despite the encouraging start to his rehabilitation, Greene's timeline for a return remains uncertain. The initial estimate outlined a 12-18 month journey back to the mound, likely excluding him from the next season's roster. Yet, with modern advancements in sports medicine, Manager Francona shares his amazement at how swiftly athletes can resume preliminary activity post-surgery. Greene, who earned a spot in the 2024 All-Star team, is currently engaged in the fourth year of a landmark six-year, $53 million contract. His salary is set to increase from $8 million this year to $15 million next, underscoring his value and potential within the Reds' lineup. Memorably, in his second start earlier this season, Greene showcased his exceptional talent by striking out 12 batters over seven scoreless innings against the Cubs, although subsequent performances saw some struggles, culminating in a season-ender marked by a 6.83 ERA. Throughout this challenging period, Greene remains optimistic and focused, envisioning a successful return to his form and reinforcing his standing as a cornerstone of the Reds’ pitching roster.
