AMD's Growth: A Risky Bet for 2028?

by Lilit Sept. 3, 2026

In 2026, AMD's stock has seen an impressive 120% increase, reflecting its bold advances in the AI-driven tech sector. Despite facing competition from Nvidia, AMD has established its own market presence, particularly with its data center services experiencing a notable 107% annual revenue increase. However, this growth is partly influenced by the market dynamics following temporary export restrictions on AI chips to China in 2025, which somewhat distort the company's actual growth picture. Last year's aggressive plans target a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 35% over three to five years, relying on anticipated data center sales growth of 80% annually. The promising growth in Q2 may indicate progress towards this goal, yet the inherent volatility in such markets makes future projections uncertain. Despite these promising strategies, AMD's current valuation is notable. Trading at 120 times its earnings is considerably higher compared to Nvidia, which stands at 30 times earnings, casting doubt on AMD's stock pricing. Looking ahead to 2028, even if AMD achieves its revenue target of $87.5 billion and aligns with a more reasonable 30 P/E ratio, its market capitalization could suggest a decline from its present level of $768 billion. Given these circumstances, potential investors should be cautious. If AMD maintains its growth path without a corresponding market revaluation of its stock's P/E ratio, a $10,000 investment today might result in a loss by 2028. It appears that AMD's anticipated future growth is already factored into its current stock price, indicating the market may not reward these expected gains.
