The Padres face a setback in their Wild Card pursuit due to a delay in Musgrove's recovery.

by Lilit Sept. 2, 2026

The San Diego Padres are facing a challenging scenario as their star pitcher Joe Musgrove encounters an unexpected delay in his recovery process. Musgrove, who has been sidelined since 2024 following Tommy John surgery and a flexor tendon repair, was on the path to recovery through a series of rehabilitation appearances. Despite his recent outings, posting a 4.60 ERA across 15.2 innings, he began experiencing fatigue and discomfort in his elbow, leaving the Padres uncertain about his return to the mound. Padres manager Craig Stammen highlighted the issue during a recent press conference, stating, “He’s just not recovering as quickly as we would like. But he’s able to recover eventually. So we’ve just got to push those days off down the road a little bit and get him out there when we can.” Musgrove's last outing saw him competing against the Oklahoma City Comets, where he demonstrated potential by allowing just one earned run over five innings, employing 60 pitches. The delay poses a significant challenge for the Padres, who have grappled with rotation problems throughout the season. Currently, they are intensely competing for a spot in the National League Wild Card, trailing by 0.5 games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks. The upcoming matches, first against the New York Yankees and later the decisive series against the Diamondbacks, mark critical test points in their playoff hopes. Musgrove's potential return could be pivotal. Since joining the Padres in 2021, he has consistently been a cornerstone of their pitching staff, especially during his standout year in 2022 with a 2.93 ERA, earning an All-Star selection. Throughout his tenure with the Padres, Musgrove has maintained a strong track record, with a 3.20 ERA and 585 strikeouts over 559.1 innings across four seasons. Even if Musgrove's contributions were limited in volume upon return, his impact could significantly uplift a Padres rotation that has struggled to accumulate innings, ranking third-fewest in the league. However, their bullpen, built around several All-Stars, has adeptly compensated for these rotation lapses with a collective ERA of 4.33. A return to form for Musgrove would steadfastly enhance this dynamic, potentially steering the Padres' push for the postseason. Until his return is realized, the Padres are left hoping the setback is minor in their race against time.
