Columbia Police Mourn Fallen Officer as Another Recovers

by Lilit Aug. 30, 2026

The city of Columbia is in mourning following the tragic death of police officer Christopher DeLong, 28, who was killed on August 29 during a shootout at Southeast Park off Garner's Ferry Road. The confrontation, tied to a domestic violence call, also left 33-year-old suspect Adam Dowdy dead, and injured Officer David Dymock, who has since been released from hospital care. Following the incident, a significant outpouring of grief and solidarity has been observed across South Carolina's law enforcement community. A solemn procession of police vehicles escorted DeLong's body from the hospital to the Richland County Coroner's Office, marking deep respect and unity among officers and agencies statewide. Columbia Police Department has shared that Officer Dymock is now recovering at home, grateful for the medical care he received and for the overwhelming support from the community. "Officer Dymock and his family appreciate the prayers, encouragement, and donations made for their welfare," a CPD statement revealed, highlighting the collective sympathy and support his household continues to receive. In remembrance of Officer DeLong, visitation and funeral arrangements have been set. Dunbar Funeral Home, aiding his family, announced that visitation will occur on Thursday, September 3, from 5-7 p.m. at their facility located at 3926 Devine St. in Columbia. The Columbia Police Department, alongside DeLong's family and friends, is preparing to bid farewell to their beloved colleague and friend with deep sorrow but also with heartfelt gratitude for his service and sacrifice.
