Metro 2039 Reimagines Morality with a Fresh Take on the Karma System

by Lilit Aug. 29, 2026

The Metro series is known for its complex karma system that influences the various endings players can experience. In games such as Metro 2033, Last Light, and Exodus, the protagonist, Artyom, could earn 'Karma Points' based on his actions, both active and passive. These points, although hidden from players, served to deepen the player's understanding of the Metro universe, its inhabitants, and the mysterious forces lurking in the shadows. Metro 2039 marks a return to the atmospheric Metro system after Exodus took players beyond Moscow's borders. The story now follows a new protagonist called the Stranger, an exile navigating a landscape dominated by the totalitarian Novoreich faction. This shift in narrative focus results in a transformation of how the Metro 2039 game world is experienced. Jon Bloch, the executive producer, offers insights into this thematic evolution: "In our previous games, we dealt with preventing conflict, which was reflected in the morality affecting player actions, choices, and narratives." However, Bloch reveals that the ideals have changed: "Where there once thrived shades of moral ambiguity, Metro 2039 offers a clear moral compass. The terrifying absence of hope and a future is underscored by the Führer's deceptive promises of salvation. Our story confronts the horrors of a world at war." Curious about how this new clarity of morality impacts the Karma system, I sought further explanation from Bloch. He confirmed that while the Karma system remains central in this deeply oppressive and nightmarish setting, there will be significant changes to its implementation. "Each entry in the Metro series uniquely adapts the concept of karma, and Metro 2039 is no exception. The principle that actions have consequences endures, but we are innovating its interpretation. Each time, it must serve our storyline," Bloch explains. Even though Bloch is tight-lipped about how exactly Karma will manifest in Metro 2039 or what actions might affect the Stranger's karma positively or negatively, during my brief experience with the game, I observed few traditional cues. Unlike in Metro 2033 and Last Light, where HUD notifications of Karma Points were common, the indicators of karma have changed in Metro 2039. Despite the mystery surrounding the Karma dynamics, players should expect this reincarnation of the system to enhance the game's exploration of morality amidst conflict. As the Stranger ponders overthrowing a dystopian regime and faces the haunting echoes of his past, it is likely that 4A Games will offer an innovative approach to moral judgment in this fractured world.
