A Glendale man was arrested following a tense standoff involving SWAT.

by Lilit Aug. 27, 2026

In a tense encounter in Glendale, Arizona, a 36-year-old man, David Melendez, was taken into custody after a barricade situation unfolded at his parents' residence. Glendale police officers witnessed Melendez displaying erratic behavior on the evening of August 26 near the intersection of 51st and Maryland avenues. His actions nearly resulted in him being struck by a vehicle, prompting officers to approach him. However, Melendez fled on foot, evading immediate contact. Pursuing officers observed Melendez as he sprinted towards a residential area and leapt over a backyard fence. Shortly thereafter, he began loudly demanding entry into a home, which was later determined to be his parents'. Complying with his calls, his parents allowed him inside, unbeknownst to what had transpired outside. In the commotion of his escape, Melendez abandoned a backpack that was subsequently retrieved by law enforcement. According to Sgt. Justin Ramsay, the bag was found to contain illegal substances. Additionally, an investigation revealed that Melendez had five outstanding felony warrants tied to previous probation violations. Authorities utilized vehicle public address systems in an attempt to coax Melendez out of the house. Although he briefly emerged, he remained shielded behind his parents, and resistance persisted. As the situation escalated, police employed a pepper ball to disperse him, but Melendez retreated back into the safety of the home. The standoff necessitated the involvement of a specialized SWAT team. Drones were introduced into the scenario, dispatched through windows in efforts to pinpoint Melendez's location. These technological measures, however, were initially unsuccessful. Cooperating with law enforcement, Melendez's parents permitted officers access to the home. A meticulous search led to the discovery of Melendez hiding ingeniously in a diminutive closet space behind a water heater. Following his apprehension, Melendez was charged with several offenses, encompassing obstruction of justice, drug possession, and addressing his outstanding felony warrants. This incident underscores the complexity of apprehending individuals with multiple legal issues and highlights the challenges faced by officers in high-tension situations.
