Armenia Faces Economic Impact from Russia's Import Restrictions

by Lilit Aug. 24, 2026

As Russia expands its import restrictions, Armenia faces potential economic challenges, particularly in its export sector, which makes up about 2% of its GDP. Russia's move affects a wide range of Armenian goods, including agricultural products like flowers, vegetables, and fish, as well as food and beverages, reflecting ongoing concerns over phytosanitary standards. S&P Global Ratings highlights the risk to Armenia, noting that Russian markets account for a significant 80-98% of certain affected exports, underscoring Armenia's heavy reliance on a single market. Despite Armenia's efforts to diversify its export destinations, such as increasing ties with the EU, these initiatives may only offer partial and short-term alleviation. The pressure on Armenia could be most intense during the summer-autumn harvest seasons, impacting its agribusinesses, rural incomes, and export revenues. However, the diversification of exports and a strong tourism sector, which is expected to continue growing, as described by experts, may help ease the situation. Tourism increased by nearly 15% in the first half of the year, mostly from visitors from Russia, Georgia, and Iran, promising more fiscal revenue and sector support. Mid-term forecasts suggest slight trade deficit improvements, depending on successful market diversification and continued tourism growth—projected to help reduce current account deficits over the coming years, potentially bringing it down to around 6% of GDP as domestic demand normalizes.
