Celtics Owner Discusses Future of TD Garden

by Lilit Aug. 21, 2026

Boston Celtics owner Bill Chisholm recently discussed the team's long-term strategy concerning its venue, TD Garden, emphasizing that owning an arena isn't crucial for financial competitiveness in the NBA. In an interview on WEEI's Greg Hill Show, Chisholm stressed the importance of providing a world-class experience for players and fans, while indicating that ownership of the facility isn't immediately necessary. Chisholm clarified the team's position, recognizing the necessity for a top-tier arena that aligns with the Celtics' standards of excellence. However, he mentioned that actually owning the arena isn't required unless it becomes essential for maintaining control over the quality of the facility. Chisholm reassured stakeholders that while arena ownership is a consideration, the main focus remains on upholding the Celtics' tradition of excellence on the court. Since purchasing the Celtics in a $6.1 billion deal in 2025, Chisholm has appreciated the benefits of their partnership with Delaware North, which operates TD Garden. He emphasized that the current arrangement is beneficial due to its prime location and expressed optimism about continuing improvements and alignment with Delaware North. Opened in 1995, TD Garden has witnessed significant historical moments, becoming a celebrated venue in Boston's sports scene. It ranks between Fenway Park and Gillette Stadium in age among major Boston sports sites. Chisholm's comments come in the context of a venue with a rich history, having hosted iconic Celtics championship victories in 2008 and 2024. Despite leasing TD Garden, meaning Delaware North earns profits from non-Celtics events like concerts and other entertainment, the Celtics stay committed to exploring options that align with their strategic goals. While NBA teams like the Clippers, Warriors, and Bucks increasingly benefit from owning their arenas, the Celtics are keeping a close eye on their own venue strategy. The current lease extends through 2036, but Chisholm's remarks highlight ongoing evaluations of facility upgrades and potential changes. Whether through collaboration with Delaware North or possibly pursuing an independent venue in the future, the Celtics are actively considering their options to maintain their status as a top-tier franchise while balancing financial prudence and team excellence.
