Avalon Airport Set to Transform as Key E-Commerce Logistics Hub

by Lilit Aug. 13, 2026

Avalon Airport, located near Geelong in Victoria, is undergoing a strategic transformation to become a dedicated logistics hub for goods produced in Asia, largely supported by major eCommerce marketplaces such as Temu and Shein. This strategic initiative follows a new agreement with Teleport, a specialized logistics firm and AirAsia's cargo division, which will manage a dedicated air freight operation at the airport. The primary goal of this hub is to speed up the delivery of e-commerce parcels arriving from overseas while also offering affordable freight solutions for exporters of perishable goods in Victoria and Tasmania. A key goal of this initiative is to ensure that incoming cargo is unloaded from an aircraft, cleared, and en route to its destination within just 60 to 90 minutes. Ari Suss, the CEO of Avalon Airport, emphasized the partnership's importance in boosting the airport's role in international freight and logistics. "This represents a remarkable advancement for Avalon's international cargo strategy, aligned with our ambition to emerge as a leading freight and logistics gateway," he remarked. "Collaboratively, we are forging a long-term logistics partnership that will strengthen international trade connections and unlock new opportunities for Victoria." Logistics have been highlighted as a key driver of eCommerce purchasing trends, with 73% of shoppers citing an exceptional delivery experience as a decisive factor in preferring online shopping over traditional in-store purchases. Teleport already facilitates the movement of cargo into and from major Australian airports located in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth, from key Asian origin markets such as China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Positioning Avalon as a strategic operations center is a significant step in Teleport’s global network expansion spanning Oceania, the Middle East, and Europe, alongside its airline partners. Pete Chareonwongsak, CEO of Teleport, stated that Avalon perfectly aligns with the company's expansion strategies. "Cross-border e-commerce requires rapid and specialized processing, prompting our customers' need for swift and reliable connectivity," he emphasized. "Avalon Airport is an ideal match, offering curfew-free capacity processing, quick turnarounds, and flexibility to manage both eCommerce and general cargo efficiently. "Teleport brings significant e-commerce volume and an extensive regional network reach, while Avalon offers the necessary dedicated infrastructure to serve as a strengthened freight gateway for Victoria. We view secondary hubs as a proven catalyst for air cargo growth." Teleport's operations at Avalon will be supported by cargo capacity made available through partnerships with 55 airlines, including AirAsia and Jetstar, using the cargo hold of passenger airplanes. This development is expected to create at least 50 jobs and add "tens of millions" of dollars in value for exporters. Avalon Airport opened a state-of-the-art $8 million 24-hour freight processing facility in October 2025 and has plans to increase freight volume tenfold, aiming for 100,000 tonnes per year. However, this ambitious expansion underscores the growing impact of cost-effective platforms, which are currently under rigorous international scrutiny.
