Avalon Airport Embraces E-commerce Growth with New Freight Hub

by Lilit Aug. 13, 2026

In a significant move aimed at bolstering its logistics capabilities, Avalon Airport, located near Geelong in Victoria, has officially become home to a dedicated freight hub for Asian e-commerce giants like Temu and Shein. The airport has inked a strategic agreement with Teleport, a logistics specialist and AirAsia's cargo arm, to operate a specialized air freight operation. This development is set to revolutionize the delivery of international e-commerce packages, by facilitating quicker transit from overseas. The hub will also offer more affordable freight solutions for the export of perishable goods from Victoria and Tasmania, significantly enhancing regional trade efficiency. The ambitious aim is to reduce the time from plane arrival to truck departure to just 60 to 90 minutes. Ari Suss, Avalon's chief executive, emphasized the importance of the partnership in elevating the airport's status in global freight logistics. He remarked, "This marks a monumental step in Avalon's international cargo strategy, aspiring to be a leading gateway for freight and logistics." The impact of logistics on online shopping cannot be overstated; a survey reveals that 73% of consumers would favor online shopping if it guarantees a seamless delivery experience. As such, Teleport’s logistics operations already span major Australian cities like Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth, streamlining the import and export from crucial Asian markets, including China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Avalon's establishment as a core operational hub aligns with Teleport's broader expansion goals across regions such as Oceania, the Middle East, and Europe, collaborating closely with its airline allies. Teleport’s CEO, Pete Chareonwongsak, underscored Avalon’s strategic relevance, stating, "The demands of cross-border e-commerce make rapid, specialized processing essential. Avalon Airport, with its uninterrupted operational framework, swift turnarounds, and e-commerce-friendly infrastructure, represents the perfect growth setting." Through AirAsia, Jetstar, and a network of 55 other airline partners, Teleport will utilize available cargo space in passenger planes to service the Avalon hub. This venture is anticipated to generate upwards of 50 new jobs and inject substantial economic value for the area's exporters. Avalon Airport, having unveiled an advanced $8 million freight processing facility in October 2025, is on a trajectory to augment its cargo volume dramatically, targeting a tenfold increase to reach 100,000 tonnes annually. The expansion also highlights the broader global trend of intensified scrutiny over low-cost platforms and their maturing logistics networks.
