News - Free HEPA Purifiers for San Pedro Amid Bridge Traffic Shift

Southern California's San Pedro residents are being offered a breath of fresher air, thanks to a new Caltrans initiative. As part of efforts to offset the impact of increased vehicle emissions due to the impending closure of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, Caltrans is distributing free HEPA air purifiers to eligible residents. The initiative targets households in Wilmington, San Pedro, and neighboring areas lying near the redirected traffic path owing to the bridge closure. Eligible homes, situated within 750 feet of specified detour routes, are entitled to receive a Medify Air MA-40 purifier along with three complimentary replacement filters, contingent on availability. These high-efficiency units, lauded for their True HEPA H13 filtration, are adept at capturing fine airborne particles such as dust, smoke, pollen, and other harmful pollutants, ensuring cleaner indoor air. Given their retail price, residents are seeing substantial savings while reducing potential health risks from elevated pollution. Key areas included in the eligibility zone encompass parts of Pacific Coast Highway, Anaheim Street, Harry Bridges Boulevard, Alameda Street, and Gaffey Street, along with the East I Street interchange. Residents in these zones will receive postcards containing unique registration codes, which are to be entered on the program's website to validate addresses and secure a purifier unit. To collect their air purifiers, residents must provide proof of residency at the time of pickup with documentation such as utility bills, rental agreements, or other official paperwork; photo identification is recommended but not mandatory. This community health measure, applauded by LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn, underscores Caltrans' commitment to mitigating the environmental impacts of necessary infrastructure updates. The program is due to run until June 2027, with potential participants urged to register by the cutoff date of May 1 or join a waitlist if initial supplies are exhausted.
