The increasing trend of ghosting among young professionals poses challenges for employers.

by Lilit Aug. 9, 2026

In a shift that mirrors dating culture, Gen Z is increasingly 'ghosting' potential employers. As companies adapt to a cooler hiring climate, a growing number of hiring managers report instances where job candidates vanish after accepting offers, skipping paperwork or failing to show up on day one. Mary Julia Koch, Associate Editor of the Wall Street Journal, discussed this phenomenon on 'Varney & Co.', highlighting its link to cultural and economic shifts affecting young adults today. The generation facing delayed life milestones is entering a job market shaped by prolonged economic turbulence, further exacerbated by housing market pressures and inflation. Koch suggests that these factors contribute to a feeling among Gen Z that they're excluded from achieving the quintessential American dream. 'Those of prime home-buying age during the pandemic found themselves bypassed,' Koch elaborates, 'leading to a belief that the system is skewed against them.' Additionally, the habit of ghosting appears connected to Gen Z's communication style, shaped by an online-first world. Resume.org's survey reveals 54% of hiring managers experienced this phenomenon. Koch argues that the digital upbringing makes direct interactions daunting for some, turning interviews into anxiety points for this screen-savvy generation.
