Coca-Cola's Custom Cans: A Controversial Algorithm Unveiled

by Lilit Aug. 7, 2026

In a surprising turn of events, Coca-Cola's personalized can service is under scrutiny due to its controversial and inconsistent moderation system. Following a surge of social media criticism over the online tool's refusal to approve certain custom messages, Fox News Digital conducted an investigation revealing an erratic framework. This discovery raises questions about the fairness and impartiality of Coca-Cola’s algorithm that moderates users' custom messages within the 18-character limit. The scrutiny began when users found the system blocked religious expressions like 'Jesus is Lord' and political slogans such as 'Make America Great,' yet allowed phrases associated with left-wing activism and other contentious terms. For instance, terms linked to child exploitation like 'Pedophile Pride' shockingly passed through the filter, exposing the platform's weaknesses. Religious and faith-based expressions seem to face severe suppression, forbidden under the guise of avoiding inappropriate or trademark-related phrases. In contrast, secular phrases and some religious greetings were approved. The phrase 'Shalom' is acceptable, but 'Allah is Lord' is not. Similarly, political imbalances are evident, as 'Defund the Police' is allowed, while right-wing slogans and racial pride terms are categorically banned. The inconsistencies also extend internationally, with geopolitical terms like 'Stand with Israel' being permitted, while 'Free Palestine' is blocked. Users discovered that basic text manipulation, such as altering characters with spaces or numbers, could bypass restrictions, indicating flaws in the tool's design. Coca-Cola has responded by disabling the personalization preview feature and pausing new personalized orders to address these issues. A spokesperson noted that while a technical issue is being resolved, the tool is intended to foster connectivity and celebration among Coca-Cola's global audience. The company emphasizes that orders go through moderation to comply with their strict guidelines. This is not the first instance of criticism for Coca-Cola's customization tool, which faced similar concerns in 2021. The brand is now charged with improving the system based on user feedback, striving to create a more consistent and equitable platform for self-expression.
