Unexpected Victory: Smith Defeats Trump-Supported Candidate in Michigan

by Lilit Aug. 5, 2026

In a surprising turn of events, Republican voters in Michigan's 8th Congressional District have chosen Thomas J. Smith to face off against Democratic Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet in the upcoming election. This decision comes despite former President Donald Trump's backing of Amir Hassan, marking a significant defiance among GOP voters. The district, known for its competitive nature encompassing areas like Flint, Saginaw, Midland, and Bay City, could play a pivotal role in determining the balance of power in Congress. Smith, who has reiterated his commitment to conservative principles and constitutional freedoms, managed to secure more than 50% of the vote. His campaign platform highlights support for working families, border security, and governmental accountability. The Detroit News reported that Smith had previously suspended his campaign in July in favor of Al Lemmo, yet he emerged victorious defying expectations and the recent endorsement dynamics. Hassan, endorsed by Trump and linked through familial ties to the local auto industry, failed to galvanize enough support despite a strong advocacy for fundamental conservative values. Al Lemmo, who also competed and presented a notably pro-life and pro-onshoring agenda, did not gain sufficient traction. Smith's win was officially declared by the Associated Press, as he voiced his gratitude and readiness to challenge Rivet. On the other hand, Rivet, once a state senator for Bay City, had already secured her spot, preparing to defend her position against this newly elected Republican challenger. The developments in this context underline the unpredictable nature of the political landscape as the GOP aims to broaden its influence in the House.
