Pioneering artist Betye Saar passes away at 99

by Lilit July 28, 2026

Betye Saar, an iconic figure whose art intricately explored the depths of Black identity, passed away at the age of 99 in Los Angeles. Confirmed by her relatives, Saar's death marked the end of a century-long life filled with pioneering artistic contributions and cultural impact. Renowned for her striking assemblage art, Saar was a central figure in the 1960s Black Art Movement. Her work often repurposed Jim Crow-era memorabilia, transforming them into profound symbols of Black empowerment and liberation. Born and raised in Pasadena, Saar's early life in a vibrant community of Black artists fueled her creative journey. Despite beginning her professional life in design, her transition to art at the age of 35 marked a significant shift. Influenced by structures like Simon Rodia's Watts Towers, Saar's oeuvre expanded across mediums, encompassing painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Her work often featured found objects and symbols, making powerful statements about cultural and racial narratives. One of Saar's most seminal works, 'Black Girl’s Window' created in 1969, was only recognized decades later, finally acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2019. Similarly influential was 'The Liberation of Aunt Jemima,' crafted in 1972, which reimagined derogatory memorabilia into icons of rebellion in response to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Saar's transformation of such symbols reflected her potent response to societal injustices and her commitment to depicting Black resilience. Throughout her career, Saar not only produced thought-provoking art but also became a beacon of guidance for future generations of Black artists, including the renowned Kerry James Marshall. Despite being showcased at prestigious venues like the Whitney Museum in 1975, her work gained widespread exhibition later on, notably with shows at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and MoMA in 2019. In 2026, Saar was immortalized in the American Academy of Arts and Letters for her indelible impact on American art. Angela Robinson Witherspoon, in her 2023 documentary 'Betye Saar: Ready to Be A Warrior,' captures Saar's relentless spirit and dynamic artistic voice, featuring interviews with prominent figures like John Legend and Tina Knowles. The documentary explores Saar's desire to participate in the Civil Rights Movement and challenge the white-dominated art world, all while parenting her daughters. Currently, Saar's legacy continues with exhibitions like 'Let’s Get It On: The Wearable Art of Betye Saar' in Los Angeles focusing on her foray into costume design, and a showcase of over 100 of her dolls at the New-York Historical Society. Saar's art remains a testament to her unwavering commitment to reflect and reshape the narrative of Black identity and history through her unique artistic lens.
