Biden's Memoir Tapes Spark Legal and Security Debate

by Lilit July 27, 2026

Recently released audio recordings of Joe Biden, made during the creation of his 2017 memoir 'Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose,' have become a focal point of legal and security discussions. The tapes, which were released after a lengthy court battle spearheaded by the conservative nonprofit Oversight Project, feature Biden in conversations that sometimes highlight his struggles with memory and decision-making processes. The recordings surfaced into the public eye after Special Counsel Robert Hur referenced them in his 2024 report. Hur's investigation began after the discovery of documents marked as classified from Biden’s tenure in the Senate and vice presidency found at his private Delaware residence and office. Despite considering various aspects of the case, Hur decided not to recommend any criminal charges against Biden, citing insufficient evidence proving willful misconduct. In the tapes, Biden makes references to sensitive governmental meetings and reveals, at times, possessing extensive notes the White House was unaware he maintained. He candidly remarks on finding 'classified stuff' in his home, often in a matter-of-fact manner that Hur suggests might reflect forgetfulness rather than intent. Other parts of the recordings reveal Biden being more cautious, as he specifically refers to 'nonclassified' parts of discussions. Despite concerns, Hur concluded that the Department of Justice would face significant hurdles to prove Biden acted wrongfully, noting his tone and demeanor could lead jurors to see him as a 'sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with poor memory.' The Oversight Project's drive to release the tapes pointed to transparency concerns and aimed at exposing instances of alleged corruption. Following a ruling against Biden, he withdrew legal resistance against making the tapes public, ending a prolonged legal affair. These tapes, published on the Oversight Project’s YouTube channel, continue to stir public discourse regarding the implications of political figures managing sensitive materials and the balance between transparency and security. Meanwhile, Biden is reportedly working on another memoir, 'Promise Me, America,' scheduled for release later this year.
