Hope Persists: Elizabeth Smart Speaks on Nancy Guthrie's Disappearance

by Lilit July 27, 2026

Elizabeth Smart, a renowned kidnapping survivor, recently shared her thoughts on the ongoing disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, who was abducted 25 weeks ago from her home in Catalina Foothills, Tucson, Arizona. In her interview with E! News, Smart emphasized the importance of hope, stating, "There isn't a body, so there is still reason to believe she is alive, and we shouldn't give up until we find her." Despite 84-year-old Guthrie's prolonged absence, Smart is optimistic about the possibility of a safe return. Behind the scenes, investigators are working diligently, although results from DNA tests and forensic examination remain confidential. A curious ransom note and a subsequent message asserting Guthrie's death have surfaced but lack confirmation of authenticity from the authorities. Elizabeth Smart's own abduction story in 2002 highlighted the value of public involvement in criminal cases. At 14, she was kidnapped from her family's home in Salt Lake City, Utah, by Brian David Mitchell and Wanda Barzee. Nine months later, thanks to public recognition and media coverage, Smart was rescued by the police. Today, she channels her experience into advocating for others and recently forayed into amateur bodybuilding, clinching first place in a novice competition. Guthrie, also the mother of "Today" co-host Savannah Guthrie, was forcibly removed from her home on February 1. The FBI and Google released footage from her Nest doorbell camera capturing a masked individual outside her residence. Authorities continue to solicit leads via hotlines and offer over $1.2 million as a reward. The public is urged to report any seemingly minor details, as they could be crucial. The case, though challenging, still inspires hope amid uncertainty.
