News - Submit Your Poem for the Prestigious Beals Poetry Prize

Poets have until August 14 to submit their work to the celebrated Beals Prize for Poetry. Now in its seventh year, this competition is a highlight for poetry enthusiasts in Massachusetts and select New Hampshire communities. During a special event at Beals Memorial Library, Winchendon, on September 24, ten chosen poets will present their verses aloud, vying for top honors including cash prizes. Rooted in a vision to enrich the poetic arts, Library Director Manuel King launched this competition in 2018. Inspired by distinguished poet Candace Curran, King has seen the competition's scope and quality flourish annually. Sponsored by the Winchendon Cultural Council and Friends of the library, this opportunity extends to adult poets who haven't previously secured first place. The competition offers $250 for the winner, with $100 and $50 for the second and third place respectively. Not only a champion for adult poetry, Beals Memorial Library also encourages young voices through its fourth annual Beals Prize for Young Poets, addressing students in grades nine through 12. Additionally, the library will celebrate literature with its inaugural Indie Author Book Fair on September 19, gathering authors, illustrators, and literary figures to showcase their talents.
