News - US Homicide Rates Plummet, Exceptions in Eight Cities

In an encouraging trend for public safety officials, the Council on Criminal Justice (CCJ) has reported an 18% decrease in murder rates across several major American cities for the first half of 2026. This reduction could lead to the lowest national homicide rate since 1900, assuming the trend continues as per upcoming FBI statistics. CCJ's analysis spanned 36 cities, tracking 13 different offenses, showing 215 fewer homicides compared to the previous year. Despite this national decline, eight cities bucked the trend, with notable increases in homicide rates. Norfolk, Virginia, recorded a staggering 64% increase, while San Francisco saw a 55% rise. Other cities such as Dallas and Salt Lake City experienced increases of 30% and 20%, respectively. Conversely, cities like Lincoln, Nebraska, and Rochester, New York, reported significant decreases, with Lincoln going from six murders down to zero, and Rochester seeing a 76% drop. Officials from cities with reported increases have questioned these figures. For instance, the Dallas Police Department contested their 30% increase, and San Francisco’s police department highlighted only a slight rise in numbers, attributing their record low in 70 years as a context. Norfolk, historically having its lowest rates in 40 years, credited staffing and technological enhancements for their past successes and questioned the current figures. The CCJ pointed out that the data, collected immediately after each reporting period, often varies from later official records. The report attributed the decline to diverse factors spanning different cities' political, economic, and policing environments, emphasizing that no single policy or leadership change was responsible. While some have credited federal law enforcement or border security policies, the CCJ report authors clarified that such conclusions can't be drawn directly from the study data. New York City, contributing positively to this national trend, reported its fewest homicides ever recorded in the first six months of any year, underscoring the successful overall decline in urban murders this year.
