Survey Reveals Deteriorating Work-Life Balance in UK

by Lilit July 23, 2026

An in-depth study conducted by MyPerfectCV, known as the Always-On Workforce Report 2026, unveils that 92% of British professionals are unable to disconnect from work outside their official hours. The survey, which included 1,500 participants from the UK, Spain, Italy, France, and Germany, highlights the growing trend of UK workers engaging in job-related activities beyond their contracted times. This constant connectivity continues even during sickness, with 91% of UK respondents admitting to working while ill. The prevalence of 'presenteeism'—a condition where employees disregard personal health in favor of maintaining work presence—emerges as a significant concern, with 34% frequently pushing through illness. Additionally, the anxiety associated with requesting time off, alongside high workloads and managerial expectations, have been pointed out as primary reasons for this pervasive inability to switch off. A notable 55% reportedly engage with professional communications daily, far exceeding the European average of 29%. The report underscores the adverse impacts on personal well-being, as many employees find it increasingly challenging to mentally decouple from their obligations even during breaks, leading to detrimental effects on mental health and personal relationships. Jasmine Escalera from MyPerfectCV emphasizes that this 'always on' lifestyle is fueled by numerous small choices to remain connected and is reshaping the boundary between professional commitments and personal time for many in the UK.
